NVIDIA’s latest Game Ready driver boosts performance in several DirectX 12 games

NVIDIA is claiming up to a 33 per cent gain in Rise of the Tomb Raider at 4K.

Both AMD and NVIDIA have committed to timely driver updates that are optimized for the latest game releases, but the performance improvements they deliver are usually modest and nothing to get too excited about. However, that’s not quite the case with NVIDIA’s latest Game Ready 378.78 driver, which promises decent performance gains in a handful of DirectX 12 games, including a 33 per cent boost in Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The new driver is optimized for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands as well, but the most interesting portions of the changelog concern the DirectX 12 refinements that are responsible for improved performance with the new API. And yes, it goes without saying that this driver also adds support for the monstrous GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

According to NVIDIA, you can expect an average of a 16 per cent increase across five titles, but we should point out that the perceived benefit varies widely between games, and NVIDIA’s claims refer only to 4K performance. For instance, the 4 per cent increase in The Division from 31.5fps to 32.7fps is practically negligible.

Furthermore, the numbers that NVIDIA is comparing with are based on drivers that are quite old, so the actual performance differential is probably less.

Nevertheless, a focus on DirectX 12 optimizations is always welcome, and NVIDIA says it is also working on improving performance for Vulkan by a “considerable degree”.

Unfortunately, the company did not go into the specifics of how it is bringing about these improvements.

You can download the new driver from NVIDIA’s website.
