NVIDIA’s beta Mac drivers for its 10-series cards are live now
NVIDIA has fulfilled its promise to support its new GeForce GTX 10-series cards on Macs. The company has quietly released beta drivers for macOS Sierra here, and it should support any Pascal-based 10-series GPU, from the entry-level GeForce GTX 1050 all the way up to the Titan Xp.
This represents quite a significant upgrade for Mac users who have previously been limited to the 9-series cards, but there still remain limited avenues for users to make use of it. For instance, the list of Macs that can actually use the new GPUs is woefully short and includes just some of the previous-generation Mac Pros that feature PCIe slots.
That said, another way is to use the GPUs in external Thunderbolt 3 GPU docks in order to get around what Apple officially supports, a method that’s popular in the “Hackintosh” community.
We’d like to think that this means that Apple will put Pascal GPUs in the updated Mac Pro that it has said it is working on, but it’s probably better to temper your expectations. After all, NVIDIA has maintained macOS drivers for Maxwell-based cards despite Apple never having shipped them in any Macs.
