NVIDIA may just do away with mobile versions of its new GeForce GTX 10 series GPUs
There are rumors that point to the intention of NVIDIA to do away with mobile graphics chipset of its recently launched GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 GPUs. This is according to PC Gamers who reportedly spoke with their close contact in NVIDIA. This report holds weight as we have already seen premium MSI gaming notebooks like the MSI GT83S that comes equipped with a pair of desktop NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series GPUs in SLI configuration.
We have also seen the previous generation desktop GeForce GTX 980 chip being featured in high-end gaming notebooks. Despite the portending change in the company’s strategy to make inroads into the mobile gaming market segment, it isn’t possible to fully transplant the new desktop GPUs into gaming notebooks, NVIDIA would still need to repurpose the full desktop GPUs by lowering some core voltages, and also lowering the base clock speeds of the GPUs.
As observed by PC Gamer, NVIDIA is merely extending their philosophy, behind the introduction of the desktop GeForce GTX 980 GPU to gaming notebooks, to their Pascal-based GPUs for mobile graphics.
