NVIDIA has issued a voluntary recall of its eight-inch Shield Tablet. The problem apparently lies with the batteries, which can overheat and pose a fire hazard. The recall affects all Shield tablets sold between July 2014 and July 2015, so do take note if you bought your tablet in the past year.

If you think you might have a defective device, you can visit NVIDIA’s support website for information on obtaining a replacement. NVIDIA is also asking consumers to stop using the recalled tablet where possible.

This is a voluntary recall, so consumers will have to register as part of the recall in order to receive a replacement tablet.

If you're not sure if you have an affected unit, you can navigate to the About tablet menu in Settings. Select Status to pull up your device information and look under the Battery header. If your battery is listed as Y01, your Shield Tablet needs to be replaced. But if you see it listed as B01, it means your device uses a newer, unaffected battery.
