NVIDIA to Expand Business Through Licensing
NVIDIA is looking to expand its business through licensing its graphics technology to other device manufacturers. The company intends to start with its Kepler architecture, where licensees will receive all the necessary support such as designs and collateral in order to incorporate NVIDIA graphic cores into their own devices. The company is also looking to offer licensing rights to their visual computing portfolio so licensees can develop their own GPU functionality.
While this is a huge step for the industry, this isn't the first time NVIDIA has licensed its technology to other companies; the Playstation 3 uses an NVIDIA GPU core while Intel pays NVIDIA a licensing fee of more than $250 million annually for its visual computing patents.
