NVIDIA Announces New Tegra 4i Mobile Processor with Integrated 4G LTE

NVIDIA has announced its Tegra 4i mobile processor. Besides featuring an integrated 4G LTE modem, this system-on-chip (SoC) sports a 2.3GHz quad-core R4 Cortex-A9 CPU, a graphics engine with sixty custom NVIDIA GPU cores and a low-power battery saver core. The Tegra 4i is touted as a compact high-performance chip, half the size of current smartphone contemporaries, while delivering the same core functions without any compromise in performance levels.

Based on the architecture of the Tegra 3, the Tegra 4i is a new addition to the Tegra 4 family. The new mobile processor naturally inherits the high dynamic range (HDR) photography and video engine of Tegra 4 which has been recently christened as the Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. Its integrated 4G LTE modem is controlled by the NVIDIA i500 'soft-modem' that can be re-programmed over-the-air to ensure networking upgradability and compatibility.

The Tegra 4i marks the successful collaboration between NVIDIA and ARM; it also marks former's attempts to gain more ground in the smartphone market. With Tegra 4i phones slated for commercial release by the end of the year, it remains to be seen if their collaboration will truly come to fruition.
