NVIDIA Announces New GeForce GTX 800M Mobile GPUs

NVIDIA has just announced its latest GeForce GTX 800M series of mobile GPUs. This is a top to bottom line-up of GPUs that NVIDIA claims are faster and more efficient than the previous generation and will feature a host of new technologies. It will also include the GeForce GTX 880M, which NVIDIA is calling the world's fastest notebook GPU.

To begin, the new GPUs will support the latest NVIDIA technologies such as GameStream and ShadowPlay, which we wrote about at NVIDIA's special event in Montreal last year. More importantly, the new GPUs will also include a new technology called Battery Boost, that aims to extend gaming time when playing on batteries. According to NVIDIA, Battery Boost can extend gaming time by up to 100%.

The new line-up will feature a mix of GPUs based off on Kepler and Maxwell arcihtectures. Currently, the high-end GPUs, such as the GeForce GTX 880M, are based on Kepler; whereas the mid-range and entry-level ones, such as the GeForce GTX 860M and GeForce GTX 850M, are based on the newer first-generation Maxwell architecture. Architecture differences aside, all GeForce GTX 800M series GPUs will have the same feature set as mentioned above.

The new Razer Blade will feature the GeForce GTX 870M and will sport a resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels QHD display.

Already, OEM partners are preparing for the releases of their updated notebooks fitted with these new GPUs. Some models to look out for include the new Razer Blade, which will feature the GeForce GTX 870M, as well as the ASUS G750 and MSI GT70 Dominator, which will be powered by the flagship GeForce GTX 880M.

Featuring the NVIDIA's new mid-range GPUs will be models like Gigabyte's new P34 notebook, which will have the GeForce GTX 860M, and the Acer Aspire R7, which is powered by the GeForce GTX 850M.
