NUS launches the new National Cybersecurity R&D Laboratory to the tune of S$8.4 million
The National University of Singapore has launched the new National Cybersecurity R&D Laboratory (NCL) to the tune of S$8.4 million. The new cybersecurity lab is hosted by NUS and it is funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), a department in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), under the auspices of the National Cybersecurity R&D Programme.
NCL is a “national shared infrastructure that provides ready-to-use environments and hosts realistic data repositories for experimentation and education in cybersecurity.” The lab is open to researchers, businesses, and educators, who can conduct experiments expeditiously due to NCL’s test platforms that are conducive for such endeavors. The NCL isn’t a standalone effort by the university and NRF as the lab will work together with Singapore Cybersecurity Consortium and the NUS-Singtel Cyber Security R&D Laboratory, in furthering cybersecurity research and development.
Besides such initiatives by our government and local education institutions, private sector companies have also taken steps to enhancing cybersecurity research and education. In January last year, NEC set up their Cyber Security Factory in Singapore to shore up the country’s defenses against cyber-attacks. Microsoft operates one of their four Microsoft Transparency Centers in Singapore, and the facility is the company’s first full-fledged Cybersecurity Center in Southeast Asia. Since launching in April last year, the Singtel Cyber Security Institute aims to enhance the cybersecurity skills of businesses and governments in the region.
