Nokia "not in a hurry" to re-enter the smartphone market
Although Nokia can start making or selling its own-branded phones, the Finnish company is not in a hurry to do so. In fact, it may be a long wait.
According to Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri, the company is "not in a hurry". It has been looking for suitable partners to handle the manufacturing and sales aspects while focusing on its design expertise and building its brand up again.
“We don’t want to just put logos on somebody’s devices,” Suri said. “It needs to feel like Nokia, what Nokia was known for.”
In the meantime, Nokia will be focusing much of its resources on network equipment. It acquired network gear Alcatel-Lucent last year and shared its plans for a 5G ecosystem. Another unit of its business, Nokia Technologies, will continue to maintain and license its extensive patent portfolio, license the Nokia brand for use in consumer products, and offer more products such as the virtual reality camera Nokia OZO.
Suri claims that these activities are part of a 10-year plan thought out in 2014 to help the company get back on its feet again. Will consumers be willing to wait that long for Nokia to release its smartphones?
