Google's culling of services and products continues. It euthanized Google Buzz less than a month ago and now Google has announced that the Gmail Application for BlackBerry devices will also be discontinued.

The current version of the Gmail App will still function as per normal and will be available for download until the 22nd of November 2011. However, after the cut-off date the BlackBerry smartphones will no longer have access to the application. However, users will still be able to access their Gmail accounts through the arduous process of punching the url in their mobile browsers.

Seeing that the iPhone Gmail App was also pulled because of a bug, it seems very soon only Android users have the option of using a Gmail App. It is unclear where Google wants to take their Gmail service on the mobile platform. The updates from their website have this to say on the matter:

Over this past year, we've focused efforts on building a great Gmail experience in the mobile browser and will continue investing in this area.

How they will continue to invest in the area remains to be seen. Recent developments have actually reduced their presence on the smartphone platform and with competition in the market extremely high, Google should know each step must be taken with extreme care.
