No "Dislike" button, but Facebook could get other buttons to express other emotions

At a recent town hall Q&A session at Facebook's HQ in Menlo Park, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will soon be testing an alternative to the "Like" button. This would allow users to express other emotions.

Naturally, this led many to speculate that Facebook will roll out a "Dislike" button, but that wouldn't be the case. According to Zuckerberg, he did not want to create an environment where people would be disliking or downvoting others' posts. We agree, as this could result in Facebook being a potentially hostile and unfriendly place. However, he did not specify exactly what kind of other buttons Facebook would be introducing.

Zuckerberg said, "Not every moment is a good moment and if you are sharing something that is sad, like the refugee crisis that touches you, or a family member passed away, it may not feel comfortable to like that post. But your friends and people want to be able to express that they understand and that they relate to you. So I do think it’s important to give people more options than just like as a quick way to emote and share what they are feeling on a post."

He added that they have an idea now and would be testing it soon. And depending on how the tests go, it would be rolled out more broadly to other users.
