Back in October 2012, Nintendo stated that it expected to have sold 5.5 million units of the Wii U by March 2013. From its launch in November 2012 till the end of the year, Nintendo managed to sell 3.06 million units of the Wii U worldwide. This number also compares favorably with the 3.19 million units of the Wii sold in 2006 over the same period of months after its launch.

But now, Nintendo has changed their projections and expects to have sold 4 million units of the Wii U come March 2013. This effectively means they are looking at a significant downturn is sales and are just aiming to move a million units in the next couple of months. While Wii U software sales have started picking up after the New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand titles, Nintendo does not think it will be able to stem the tide of declining hardware sales.

In light of the re-assessment Nintendo also expects to end the fiscal year with an operating loss for the second year running.
