Nikon has just announced the winners of the 2015 Small World Photomicrography Competition, and the images will either amaze you, freak you out, or both. The Nikon International Small World Competition began in 1975, and it’s open to anyone who loves photographing images under a microscope.

The winner of this year’s competition is Australian Ralph Grimm, for his close-up of a bee’s eye covered in dandelion pollen grains (above). Nikon also recognized over 77 other winners of the 2015 Small World competition, including a ranked Top Twenty, 12 Honorable Mentions and 56 Images of Distinction. This year’s competition received over 2,000 entires from more than 83 countries all over the world.

Check out images from this year’s competition on The Atlantic’s In Focus, with extreme-close-ups of things you’d never be able to see with the naked eye, like the scales on a moth wing (pretty), mites on insect pupa (erm), and the jaws and head of a long-jawed spider (I’ll probably have nightmares about this guy tonight).

Do you love photographing the very small too? The 2016 Small World Photomicrography Competition is open for entry now, with an April 30, 2016 deadline.

The winners of its sister competition, the Nikon Small World in Motion, which showcases movies and time-lapse photography shot under the microscope, will be announced on December 2, 2015.
