Nikon’s D3400 offers an easy first step into DSLR photography

Weighing just about 445g (with battery and memory card) and measuring just 124 x 98 x 75.5 mm, the new Nikon D3400 is Nikon’s latest entry level offering. It’s designed with a monocoque structure, and features a 24.2MP APS-C DX format sensor that’s capable of ISO sensitivities from 100 to 25,600. It also has an 11-point autofocus system, and the ability to shoot Full HD 1080/60p videos.

Take up to 16 shots in RAW format in a single burst at 5 frames per second, and easily go for a full day of shooting with just a single battery thanks to the improved battery life of this camera. With the D3400, a single EL14A battery will allow for up to 1,200 shots per charge with Bluetooth disabled and hours of automatic image transfer with SnapBridge enabled.

Photography effects made easy - thanks to the dedicated EFFECTS mode.

10 special effect options make it easy for you to take full control of your images. Simply set the mode dial to “EFFECTS” and select the option you’d like to see applied. The results will appear on the LCD in real time, so you can confirm the effect even before you press the shutter. Together with the 20 in-camera retouch menu options, the D3400 makes it easy for you to do all your post-processing even without the use of a computer.

Of course, there’s also the handy “GUIDE” mode, which leads you through every step of the process of taking images - from setting up the camera to taking, viewing and retouching of your images. With example images next to the instructions, it’s easy to find out just how to achieve the look you have in mind.

SnapBridge makes it easy to get pictures from your camera to your phone.

It seems Nikon is also stepping up their overall emphasis on social media sharing, adding SnapBridge connectivity via Bluetooth low energy technology. This means that the camera is constantly connected to your smart device, with a 2MB version of every photo you take automatically sent over. Snap with your camera, share with your phone.

The connectivity even allows automatic sync of location, time and date, so you’ll always have the most accurate information to tag your photos with. Copyright, exposure, and other image information can also be embedded if you choose, so the camera can literally fill in all the blanks for you.

The D3400 will be available from mid-September 2016 with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens in a choice of red or black, but pricing has yet to be announced.
