Nikon introduces D810A for astrophotographers and new Coolpix models for the rest of us

At the CP+ show that’s now happening in Yokohama, Japan, Nikon has unveiled the D810A, which is a specialist edition of its D810 designed for astrophotography. The D810A is still a 36.3-megapixel full-frame DSLR, but it now sports the ability to capture astronomical subjects that emit the H-alpha wavelengths of light, such as nebulae and other distant galaxies in red due to its modified IR-cut filter. Features like longer exposures in low-light conditions with minimal noise, and a live view preview function should also come in handy for astrophotographers when they plan their shots.

The Nikon D810A will be available in early June 2015.

New Coolpix cameras

We also see several new Coolpix compact cameras, such as the P610, L840, AW130, and S7000. The P610 is a 16MP camera boasting a 0.8 second startup time, and a shooting time lag of about 0.12 second. Other features include a Dual Detect Optical VR that provides an image stabilization equivalent to a shutter speed effect of approximately 5.0 stops, a 60x optical zoom lens (24 - 1,440mm in 35mm equivalent), NFC support, and built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Coolpix L840 is a 16MP camera too, and features a 38x optical zoom lens (22.5 - 855mm in 35mm equivalent), which goes up to 76x with Dynamic Fine Zoom engaged. Other features include high ISO sensitivity (6,400), lens-shift Vibration Reduction image stabilization, 3-inch tilting LCD, NFC and Wi-Fi support, 1080/60i movie shooting, and 18 preset Scene modes.

For those looking for something more rugged, there’s the AW130. This is a 16MP shooter that’s waterproof up to a depth of approximately 30m. It’s also compliant with the Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification, making it a handy diving companion. Additionally, it can survive a drop from a height of about 2.1m, and resist cold temperatures down to –10°C. Features-wise, it has an F2.8 Nikkor lens with 5x optical zoom capability, GPS/GLONASS/QZSS support, NFC and Wi-Fi support, and is capable of full HD movie recording.

Last but not the least is the S7000, a very compact 16MP camera with a 20x optical zoom lens. This pocket-size camera weights just 161g (including battery and SD memory card), and features technologies like a Vibration Reduction system to counter camera shake, and Nikon’s Pre-focus AF and Target Finding AF. Like its cousins, it has built-in NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities, and takes 1080/60i videos aided by a 4-axis Hybrid VR system.

The Nikon Coolpix P610, L840, AW130, and S7000 will be available in Singapore in early March 2015. Pricing info isn’t available at this moment.
