Nikon D7000 Teardown Reveals Sony Sensor

The Nikon D7000 sports a new sensor and also happens to be one of the higher resolution ones at 16.2-megapixels in the Nikon DSLR range. There have been rumors floating about that the camera uses a sensor made by Sony; well those rumors can now be put to rest. A teardown of the Nikon D7000 reveals that the Nikon camera is using a Sony IMX071 sensor. Will upcoming cameras (like the rumored D400 and D800) also feature a Sony sensor? We're guessing probably yes, but as Nikon has mentioned they would like to use their own sensors, so we'll have to see what happens.

chipworks.com - The Nikon D7000 comes equipped with a DX format (APS-C) sensor fabricated by Sony, the IMX071. With a 16.2 Mp resolution, this is the second highest resolution of any Nikon DSLR, behind the 24 Mp D3X (dpreview.com). This image sensor features a pixel size of 4.8 µm x 4.8 µm (as seen in the Bayer patterned RGB color filters). The sensor displays improvements in pixel layout and process features, as compared to previous generations of Sony DSLR sensors.
