Nikon announces launch of the D5500 camera at CES 2015
The new D5500 from Nikon brings many “firsts” with it. It’s the first Nikon DSLR to implement an eye-sensor to deactivate the monitor display when you’re looking through the viewfinder (optimizing battery use). This can also be set to activate image review as soon as the eye leaves the viewfinder, optimizing playback time.
It is also the first Nikon DSLR to implement a vari-angle touch screen LCD, allowing you to take pictures from a wide variety of images.Touch operation permission mode allows you to disable touch during shooting, so as to prevent unintentional commands or sudden changes to your settings, while a ‘Touch Fn’ setting allows you to assign functions to the second Fn button that can be easily executed via the touch screen with your right thumb whilst holding the grip.
At the heart of the D5500 is a 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor that comes without optical low pass filter for optimum sharpness, and an EXPEED 4 image-processing engine for fast processing capabilities. The camera has an ISO range of 100-25600 with a 39-point AF sensor, and manages a continuous shooting rate of up to 5 frames per second, allowing for precise capture of dynamic action in any light. Meanwhile, the 2016-pixel RGB sensor works in tandem with Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System for accurate exposure, autofocus and white balance in any situation.
As with the Nikon D750 before it, all of this is encased in a monocoque structure that is strengthened with carbon fiber composite material for the front body, front cover, and rear cover, allowing it to achieve a total weight of just 420g (body only, without batteries) while not sacrificing toughness.
10 variable options are available under the Special Effects modes, and 16 options have been added to the scene mode, and now you can view the effects and make changes immediately through live view with the option of adjusting and controlling white balance and Picture Control.
Movies can be captured in Full HD 1080/60p at up to ISO 25,600, backed by crystal clear audio from the built-in stereo microphone, while Wi-Fi connectivity is built-in for easy online sharing and remote capture with live-view via Nikon’s Wireless Mobile Utility application (available for iOS and Android).
The Nikon D5500 will be available in Singapore in February 2015 with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140 f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens, or AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens or with the body-only configuration, in black only. Pricing is yet to be released.
