New PS Vita Firmware Update Expands Functionality

The new firmware update version 1.80 for the PS Vita is rolling in some changes. First up it allows for use of the portable, handheld console as a controller for the PlayStation 3. This means that not only will gamers have the standard array of buttons and sticks at their disposal, they will also be able to make use of the touch screen for gameplay on the console titles they own, making the whole package similar to the Nintendo WiiU.

In addition, Sony also announced compatibility with certain titles from the PSOne (PlayStation One). A total of nine titles are officially available for the Vita namely Arc the Lad, Cool Boarders 2, Final Fantasy VII, Hot Shots Golf 2, Jet Moto, Syphon Filter, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal 2 and Wild Arms. However Joystiq has found that extra PSOne titles Cho Aniki and Money Idol Exchanger can also be played on the PS Vita.

No news however on when we can expect new console hardware from Sony. You can try out the Ouya or the iOS GameDock in the mean time.
