New iPhones to Come with Higher Resolution Displays, NFC and Side Power Button?
Rumors and speculation on Apple's upcoming iPhone(s) are starting to pick up pace in recent weeks. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has reliable information on Apple's products, shared his predictions for the iPhones in an extensive research note.
According to Kuo, Apple will release a 4.7-inch iPhone model in Q3 and a 5.5-inch iPhone model in Q4. Apparently, the two screen sizes are catered to meet the different needs of consumers:
- Consumers who want a bigger screen for better viewing experience, but do not want to give up on one-handed operation.
- Consumers who prioritize viewing experience over one-handed usage.
To make it easier for consumers to use the iPhones, Apple will shift the power button from the top to the side. This is generally implemented by Android vendors for their phablet devices as it is more user-friendly.
The 4.7-inch iPhone is expected to sport a Retina display with a resolution of 1,334 x 750 pixels while the larger model will have a Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) display. As both models have the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5/5S/5C, apps do not need to be redesigned for the new iPhones. The displays will come with slimmer bezels.
Kuo also believes the new iPhones will be powered by the new A8 processor which is previously rumored to have a clock speed of 2.6GHz. Other predicted specs include 1GB RAM, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, NFC technology and a bigger battery for the 5.5-inch iPhone.
Contrary to earlier reports, Kuo states that Apple will retain the 8-megapixel rear camera sensor on the upcoming iPhones. The company will include optical image stabilization, a feature that competing smartphones such as the Nokia Lumia 1020 and LG G2 already have for some time.
Due to supply constraints, Kuo says that only the higher-end iPhone models such as the 64GB 5.5-inch iPhone will have sapphire displays. Apple struck a deal with GT Advanced and acquired machinery to manufacture more than 100 million sapphire crystal displays a year although it is unclear what they would be used for.
