New iPhones cleared to go on sale in China beginning October 17

Apple's latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones have finally been given the all clear sign by the Chinese authorities and will go on sale later this month in China.

The new phones have been a huge success for the company, having sold over 10 million units in just three days after its launch on September 19, even if China was left out of the launch. For comparison, last year's iPhone 5S and 5C models sold "just" 9 million units in three days and this number included China, arguably the world's largest market for smartphones.

The new phones will on sale on October 17 via China's main telco companies China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. The three are estimated to have around 1.3 billion customers. The reason for this delay was because the Chinese government wanted to be sure that the new phones and iOS 8 were free from any backdoor access that could grant U.S. spy agencies the ability to collect private data from Chinese users.

In response to this news, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "We are thrilled to bring iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to our customers in China on all three carriers at launch. With support for TD-LTE and FDD-LTE, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus customers will have access to high-speed mobile networks from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom for an incredible experience."
