The new iMac Pro is Apple's most powerful Mac ever
It has been nearly 4 years since Apple released the Mac Pro. As cool as it looks, it is outdated and in need of a thorough refresh. Apple has promised a new drastically redesigned Mac Pro for professionals, but that would probably have to wait until next year. In the meantime, however, Apple has something that is sure to delight users seeking more compute and graphics horsepower, and it is called the iMac Pro.
According to Apple, the iMac Pro is the most powerful Mac ever and can serve up as much as 22 Teraflops of computing power.
The iMac Pro comes in Space Grey and features a 27-inch 5K Retina display as standard. It also features workstation-class CPUs and GPUs. The entry-level iMac Pro comes with an 8-core Intel Xeon processor, but the iMac Pro can be spec’ed with up to an 18-core Xeon processor.
It comes with 32GB of ECC memory as standard, but can also be equipped with as much as 128GB of ECC memory, if you so required. AMD’s new Radeon Vega graphics will come as standard.
As for storage, you can order it with as much as 4TB of SSD storage.
In terms of design, the iMac Pro looks identical to a standard iMac. It is just as slim and sleek, and the reason Apple was able to achieve this even with the iMac Pro’s powerful hardware is because of a new cooling system. Apple says the cooling system in the iMac Pro gives it 80% more cooling capacity, which allows Apple to stuff powerful hardware in the same thin iMac design.
For connectivity, the iMac Pro gets four USB 3.0 ports, four USB Type-C ports with support for Thunderbolt 3, an SD card slot, and a 10Gb Ethernet port.
The iMac Pro ships later this year in December and its incredible performance is only matched by its eye-watering price tag. Prices will start at US$4,999 (~S$6903). Better start saving up then.
