Google has just recently announced a new set-top box to compete with the Amazon Fire TV

Able to stream media from the usual suspects (full list here), the diminutive (measuring only 120mm x 120mm x 20mm) player also has the ability to play games and android apps. There's also a controller (sold separately for US$39) that looks like a cross between Microsoft's Xbox One controller and the Wii U's Pro Controller.

The included remote also has voice navigation capabilities, allowing you to navigate verbally.

Manufactured by ASUS, the player will have the 'cast' capabilities of the Chromecast. It boasts a 1.8GHz quad-core Intel Atom processor, uses Wireless 802.11ac 2x2 (MIMO), 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage (Google hasn't mentioned whether it'll also come with larger storage options) and Imagination PowerVR Series 6 graphics and hooking up to your display via HDMI, Bluetooth (for the remote) and Wi-Fi for streaming media and internet access.

The Nexus Player will go on sale on November 3 in the US for US$99 and pre-orders for it open up on October 17.
