The RT-AC87U router is ASUS' flagship router and it was also one of the first AC2400-class routers to arrive on our shores.

As our review shows, it's a powerful router for demanding users. However, while the RT-AC87U had MU-MIMO capable hardware, this feature has been available to users because the firmware wasn't deemed to be ready yet.

Happily, ASUS has just announced that it has released a new firmware update that will enable MU-MIMO for the RT-AC87U. This will enable better performance with MU-MIMO enabled clients.

MU-MIMO, if you are unaware, is the latest in consumer wireless technology. To put it very briefly, it makes routers more efficient by allowing them to transmit data to multiple devices simultaneously. Routers today can only send data to one device at a time. To find out more, we encourage you to read this and our guide to 802.11ac networking.

Owners who wish to download the new firmware can do so from ASUS' download page here.
