The new ASUS ROG Strix GL502 wants to be the gaming notebook you take out with you

ASUS is on quite a roll with its ASUS ROG Strix branding, which was previously confined primarily to its graphics cards. It was only last week that we saw the first ROG Strix motherboard in the form of the ROG Strix X99 Gaming, but ASUS clearly has no intention of letting up. The company today announced the local launch of the ROG Strix GL502, a fairly compact 15.6-inch notebook that also happens to be its first ever Strix series laptop.

But the new branding aside, there are few surprises when it comes to the specifications, and the notebook comes equipped with the hardware you’d expect of a gaming laptop from ASUS. This means a sixth-generation quad-core Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor (2.6GHz, 6MB cache), an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M graphics card, and 8GB of DDR4 RAM. On the storage front, the notebook features a 128GB SSD boot drive and 1TB HDD for additional storage.

The 15.6-inch IPS display has a 1080p resolution, and also features a matte panel to cut down on glare.

While this isn’t the most powerful setup we’ve seen, ASUS hasn’t neglected the cooling system as that’s one of the most important aspects of any gaming system. The GL502 features a dedicated fan to cool the CPU and GPU independently, relying on copper heatpipes to draw the heat away.

As a subset within the larger ROG brand, Strix series products are intended to embody ROG’s reputation for premium performance, while still conveying a unique sense of individuality and dynamism. To that end, the GL502 indulges in certain design flourishes, like highlighted WASD keys and neon orange highlights on its lid, which are even more striking because the rest of the chassis is colored a deep black.

This is also a notebook that ASUS hopes you’ll use for your portable gaming needs. While it’s a far cry from the Razer Blade Stealth, ASUS has done its best to shave off the grams. The end result is a notebook that is 23.5mm thick and weighs 2.24kg – still heavy, but it won’t quite break your back.

Finally, there’s also a plethora of ports and connectors at your disposal, including a single USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0 speeds) Type-C port, three USB 3.0 Type-A ports, and Mini DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4 outputs.

The ROG Strix GL502 is available starting today at S$2,498. You can get it from all ASUS brand stores and retailers.
