Amazon has upgraded its entry-level Kindle, the first update to its base model in two years. The new Kindle sports a thinner, lighter and more rounded design, but the most interesting part is probably that it is now available in white (it looks really good).

The announcement comes not long after the launch of Amazon’s new Kindle flagship, the Oasis, and the updated basic Kindle is actually the first to come in white since 2010’s Kindle Keyboard. But wait, there’s more. Starting from today, the US$120 Kindle Paperwhite will join the Kindle in offering an option for white as well.

That aside, Amazon has doubled the memory – it now sits at 512MB – over the previous version, which should help provide a performance boost. On top of the additional memory, the Kindle is also thinner and lighter than before, which should make holding and reading from it more pleasant.

And as on all its other e-readers, Amazon is also claiming weeks-long battery life on its new basic model.

However, it will not have the 300PPI display on the Kindle Paperwhite, and Amazon has instead gone with a lower resolution 6-inch 167PPI screen. And unlike the Paperwhite and higher-end models, there is only a single Wi-Fi model available (the others offer 3G versions as well). It’s also missing certain premium features like an LED backlight for nighttime reading.

Still, it does have one distinguishing feature, and that’s support for Bluetooth connectivity – something that is missing from Amazon’s other e-readers.

The Kindle is available for pre-order now on Amazon for US$80 with Special Offers (or rather, advertisements) and US$100 without. It is expected to be released on 7 July.
