MSI unleashed its new NVIDIA GTX 10-series powered gaming notebooks

NVIDIA only just announced its GeForce GTX 10-series Pascal GPUs for the mobile segment, and notebook manufacturers have wasted no time in revealing their own respective line-up. Including one of NVIDIA’s key component partners, MSI, of course.

At an exclusive media event held in Taipei earlier this week, MSI announced a new range of gaming notebooks that uses NVIDIA’s newest GPU as its backbone. MSI is pretty bullish about them too, taking pains to convince attendees that the new notebooks are as fast if not, faster, in certain environments than their desktop-equivalent counterparts.

The new lineup is pretty comprehensive, and covers all notebooks (in various specifications) in its gaming range including the high-end GT83 series, the slim and light GS series, as well as the GT72 and the more affordable GE lineup. The nice part about some of these notebooks is that they offer a variety of form factors ranging from thin and light to more traditional dictionary-sized gaming notebook.

For instance, the GT83VR is by far the most impressive and powerful of the lot. MSI has packed it with not one, but two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs in SLI. It also comes with the latest Intel (Skylake) Core i7 processor, an 18.4-inch Full-HD display that supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and 5ms response time, up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, and a fast PCIe M.2 SSD. Serious gamers will also be happy to know that the GT83VR will also come with a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard by SteelSeries. As its name implies, the GT83VR will also be VR-ready. All these muscles won’t be cheap though, and the top-end spec-ed model comes priced at a very cool S$7,399.

Sitting somewhere in the sweet spot, lies the GS63VR Stealth Pro that comes powered with an Intel Core i7 6700HQ and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 CPU. It also comes in an ultra slim aluminum chassis that’s 17.7mm thick, and at just 1.9kg, MSI is claiming it to be the “world’s thinnest 15-inch gaming notebook”. For gamers wanting a taste of 4K gaming on the go, the similar spec-ed but larger GS73VR Stealth offers just that with its 17.3-inch display – although we’d wish MSI would offer a faster GTX 1070 GPU option for that resolution. The GS63VR and GS73VR are priced at S$3,199 and S$3,599 respectively.

At the lower end of the food chain are the affordable GE series, and the GE62VR Apache in particular caught our eyes. Available for S$2,699, it is arguably the most ‘bang for bucks’ model in MSI’s armory. The Apache comes with a GTX 1060 that powers a Full-HD 1080p display, an Intel Core i7 6700HQ processor, 8GB of DDR4 memory, as well as two drives: a 1TB conventional hard disk drive and a faster 128GB solid state drive.

These new models all come with new features, including innovative new cooling solutions, Thunderbolt 3 ports and even MSI’s own “Dragon Center” software. Dragon Center allows for hardware monitoring as well as other unique features on MSI laptops, including the ‘1 Click VR’ key, which will improve VR games frame rates by shutting down software running in the background. Most interestingly, Dragon Center will also let users control or monitor their notebook’s status in real time from their smartphones.
