Motorola Unveils the Moto G

Motorola believes the Moto G is the smartphone choice for the next 500 million consumers.

Motorola just announced a global and more affordable variant of the Moto X, the Moto G.

The Moto G comes with a 4.5-inch 720p display. It also has a curved back for a comfortable handling experience. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM and a 2,070mAh battery that is stated to provide all-day battery life.

Motorola's software strategy for the Moto G is based on three principles. First, the company believes in providing a pure Android experience without the resource-hogging customized interfaces of other Android devices. Second, Motorola believes the device and its software should complement Google mobile services, not replicate them. Third, Motorola wants to give value back to the consumers.

Having said that, the Moto G ships with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and will be upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat by January 2014. It has no customized skin over the stock Android interface, which will not clutter the user experience or hog unnecessary system resources.

Motorola claims that the Moto G runs faster than the Samsung Galaxy S4 in core functions like answering calls and booting up.

Moto G users will have 50GB free Google Drive online storage space to complement the 8GB or 16GB internal storage. Unfortunately, there is no support for memory cards. The Moto G also lacks 4G LTE connectivity.

The Moto G is priced at US$179 (8GB) and US$199 (16GB). It will be available in dual-SIM models in selected markets. Moto G goes on sale this week in Brazil and parts of Europe and will be available within the next few weeks throughout Latin America, Europe, Canada and parts of Asia. It will be available in the US, India, the Middle East and more of Asia in early January. Moto G will be in more than 30 countries with 60 partners by 2014.

The back of the Moto G is removable, allowing you to customize how the phone look with any of the 7 colors (blue, teal, red, yellow, purple, white, and black).
