More Ultrabooks Coming Your Way from CES 2012

Upcoming Ultrabooks from CES!

A good portion of Microsoft’s keynote speech highlighted how Intel has been pushing innovation in the PC computing market to bring forth Ultrabooks (and in-turn helping Microsoft move even more OS units sold to OEMs).

To a certain extent, we too agree that the coming of Ultrabooks is a blessing in disguise for the computing segment. The problem hasn’t been about making such slim and light notebooks, but to peg it at reasonable costs that more consumers can afford to hop on to the bandwagon. Had it not been for the presence of Ultrabooks, this might have otherwise been an Apple MacBook Air only segment. Intel’s strong commitment and helping hand certainly managed to bring about super thin and light computing to more manageable levels that should become the norm for 2012.

Just a couple of days ago, we reported on the Dell XPS 13, Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga and the HP Envy 14 Spectre Ultrabooks. Over at Microsoft’s booth showcasing their partner products, here are a few more notable ones that we spotted:-

Toshiba’s Portege M930 is a 13.3-inch touchscreen based Ultrabook running an Intel Core i5 processor that converts from a tablet-like form factor to being a pseudo notebook by sliding out a keyboard - much like the ASUS Eee Pad Slider, but in a bigger form factor. In its current form, Toshiba states that it weighs about 1.95kg, heavy by Ultrabook standards.

The LG Z330 is classified as a Super Ultrabook in LG’s marketing collaterals. For one, they claim to have squeezed a 13.3-inch form factor out of a traditional 12-inch notebook body. It’s also fairly thin at just 14.7mm and weighs a feather-light 1.21kg. Performance-wise, it boasts 9.9-second super boot time with a SATA 6Gbps SSD and an Intel Core i7 processor. Lastly, it comes with wireless screen sharing technology by means of Intel Wireless Display (Wi-Di) technology integrated. So far, it does have the makings of a super Ultrabook and we can’t wait to review this unit.

Samsung Series 9 needs no introduction as it was an Ultrabook even before Intel formalized this term. While it’s way too expensive in its current form, the second generation Series 9 maintains all that we liked about the original but comes with a SRP of US$1399 – much more palatable. This 1.17kg notebook still sports a 13.3-inch screen, but its resolution is now at 1600 x 900 pixels, which is a good move in our opinion.

The Samsung Series 7 Slate PC isn’t exactly an Ultrabook, but we figured we’ll lump it in this list since it is using a notebook platform, but without the keyboard. Sporting a 11.6-inch touchscreen, a Core i5 processor and weighs just over 900 grams, this is an ideal candidate for Windows 8. But for now, this US$1099 machine will have to do with Windows 7.
