More Durable and Efficient SSDs With Samsung's New 32-Layer 3D V-NAND Flash Memory

It was reported last year that Samsung has looked into the world's first 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND), which will increase a solid state drive's (SSD) total number of writes as well as make it more power-efficient.

Well it seems that 3D V-NAND isn't vaporware as the Korean conglomerate has announced that it has started mass production on its 3D V-NAND offering. Unfortunately Samsung isn't releasing any more details like price and availability, and it isn't clear if any consumer-level SSDs will feature this new technology.

V-NAND isn't new as Samsung has been manufacturing it for some time. What's new though is its 3D V-NAND chips, which have 32 layers on them instead of the first generation's 24 layers. To help with write endurance and efficiency, the new 3D V-NAND chip uses technology called Charge Trap Flash (CTF).
