We were just speculating yesterday on what the "magic slot" of the LG G5 could do and today, VentureBeat claims to have a clearer picture of its functions.

According to VentureBeat, a person familiar with the LG’s launch plans claims that the "magic slot" will be showcased alongside several plug-in modules and accessories under the branding "G5 and Friends". These hardware components or modules, will be controlled through an app, the LG Friends Manager.

At the launch event on 21st February, LG will demonstrate two modules that will work with the "magic slot". They are a battery grip for photography and a digital audio chip (DAC) for enhanced sound quality. The battery grip is known as the LG Cam Plus, and offers several functions:

  • help the user to have a better grip of the LG G5 when taking photos and videos
  • offers hardware buttons for commonly used features such as shutter release, zoom and flash toggle
  • provides extra juice via its 1,100mAh battery pack

The DAC is a collaboration with Bang and Olufsen to improve the audio experience on the LG G5 and any other connected Android devices or PCs. Aside from these two hardware modules, LG is said to be unveiling a spherical camera (the LG 360 camera) which is capable of capturing 360-degree stills and videos for playback on its first head-mounted wearable, the LG 360 VR. The LG 360 VR is rumored to come with nine-axis sensors, an 83-degree lens and a LCD display. It is supposedly lighter than existing products such as the Samsung Gear VR and HTC Vive.

LG is also launching a smartphone-controlled "drone", the Rolling Bot which can be navigated around the house for observing and interacting with pets. It can also be used for switching on and off smart appliances.
