Microsoft's Surface range just got the thumbs down from Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports (CR) just withdrew its recommendations for Microsoft's Surface range which include the latest Surface Laptop, the Surface  Book and the Surface Pro.

According to CR, it has concerns about the "poor predicted reliability" of Microsoft's notebooks and tablets when compared to their competitors. CR reportedly conducted a poll on owners of Microsoft's Surface devices and compiled the range of issues they might have encountered.

“A number of survey respondents said they experienced problems with their devices during startup,” Consumer Reports says. “A few commented that their machines froze or shut down unexpectedly, and several others told CR that the touch screens weren’t responsive enough.”

While it is normal for a certain percentage of devices to have issues over a period of time, CR claims that there is a statistically significant difference from the annual breakage rate for other brands. In response to CR's latest actions, Microsoft argues that the findings paint a false picture.

“Microsoft’s real-world return and support rates for past models differ significantly from Consumer Reports’ breakage predictability,” a spokesperson said. “We don’t believe these findings accurately reflect Surface owners’ true experiences or capture the performance and reliability improvements made with every Surface generation.”

CR is not alone in criticizing Microsoft's hardware. iFixit called the Surface Laptop a "glue-filled monstrosity" and gave it an all-time low score of 0/10 on repairability. It went on to say that "there's nothing about it that is upgradeable or long-lasting".
