Microsoft's HoloLens might be the next home for Disney's Infinity

We wonder why Baymax is in the Disney camp seeing as how Big Hero 6 is a Marvel creation.

Disney's Infinity was created to compete with Activision's Skylanders line of toys and games. Over its incarnations though, Infinity has slowly evolved into something that stands apart from Skylanders, both in how it uses its properties and how it manages its gameplay. Infinity combines physical toys and video games, with the toys representing characters you can use in-game. Using a scanning device known as an Infinity base, the toys are scanned into the game and allows players to use them as characters in-game.

At its heart, Infinity is a family game. Console versions feature local co-op prominently and Disney isn't about to change that any time soon. In an interview on Engadget, Disney Interactive's (the division of Disney behind Infinity) VP of Production, John Vignocchi mentioned that the Infinity team has been in talks with both Sony and Microsoft regarding the future of the series. Vignocchi didn't exactly rule out that Infinity might skip Project Morpheus entirely, but did say, "There's the socialization problem right now with VR, but augmented reality is very exciting.". It's not hard to figure out what he means from that.

Project Morpheus, like all VR headsets, totally isolates the viewer from the world around them. Infinity on the other hand, is focused on interaction not only between the player and the game, but between the players themselves. That's why the games made local co-op a main feature, after all.

Disney Interactive head John Blackburn echoes Vignocchi's views regarding VR headsets. Blackburn was quoted as saying, "My own experience with these devices right now is that I feel like they almost cut directly against what we're trying to do, which is experiences that can involve you with somebody else, The idea of kind of creating that family memory and playing it together is really core to the experience we're trying to build. And so when you put a lot of these headsets on, it's almost isolating in a way. Until we can get over that piece of the technology, it's not as interesting to me."

While Microsoft's hasn't revealed its gaming plans for the HoloLens, we do know that Minecraft is guaranteed to be playable with the headset. Halo too has made an appearance, though not in a way most would want. If Disney's Infinity does make HoloLens its exclusive domain in the future, it would be a massive coup for Microsoft as Disney claims that Infinity 2.0 actually beat sales of Skylanders last year
