Microsoft's heavily redesigned Skype for desktop client is now available

Several months back, Microsoft released a preview version of its new Skype desktop client. Since then, the company has been steadily adding features to this mobile-influenced client, and today, it has ditched its preview tag.

The new desktop Skype offers customizable themes, a chat list, is cloud-based, and touts cross-device functionality. There’s also a notification panel, a chat media gallery, and add-ins (if you’re a Skype Insider). Reactions, @mentions in group chats, status updates, bots - all these are in this new desktop version of Skype.

If you’re using Skype for Mac, Windows 10 November Update (2016) and lower, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Linux, and have enabled automatic updates, the new Skype update will be delivered to you when it’s ready. Alternatively, you can download and install the new version at Skype.com. Curiously, users on the latest versions of Windows 10 will receive the update later.
