Microsoft: Windows Phone 7.8 Update Coming in Early 2013 (Update)

*Update as of 22/01/2013 12.54 pm: Windows Phone Colombia posted on its Facebook Page that Windows Phone 7.5 devices will be getting the update to 7.8 from 31 January.

Existing Windows Phone (WP)7.5 users will be getting the WP7.8 update in early 2013. The announcement was made by Microsoft via its WP blog.

According to Microsoft, it is working very closely with hardware and carrier partners to get the update tested, approved, and rolled out to as many devices as possible. As a recap, the WP7.8 update will have the following features:

  • New Smart screen where you can resize the Live Tiles
  • New theme colors and accent colors
  • New lock screen features such as the option to automatically display the Bing Picture of the Day

Microsoft also stated in its post that new apps such as Angry Birds Star Wars will be available soon for WP7.5 and 7.8 users. In addition, you can expect to see new WP7.8 devices being launched in countries around the world with a range of lower price points to meet the needs and budgets of different market segments.

Due to the disparities in the hardware requirements and shared Windows Core, WP8 is not compatible with existing WP7 and 7.5 devices. Therefore, WP7.8 serves as an update to bring partial WP8 features to these devices.
