Microsoft Whittles Down List of Potential CEOs

Microsoft is busy looking for a new CEO to replace the outgoing Steve Ballmer, who recently held an emotional company meeting in September where 13,000 employees attended to say farewell. Reports suggest that the list of new potential CEOs has been whittled down considerably from around 40 to just 8. Out of the eight candidates, only three are currently with Microsoft.

It is believed that the front-running internal candidates are Tony Bates, Head of Business Development, who was formerly Skype's CEO; and Satya Nadella, Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise chief.

As for external candidates, reports point to current Ford CEO, Alan Mulally, as being the front-runner. Other names being put up include former Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop and Computer Sciences Corp. CEO Mike Lawrie.

Microsoft's new CEO will face heady challenges ahead of him/her. The company has next to nothing market share in the mobile market; its Bing search engine business has not taken off and has reported lost the company almost $3 billion in the past two years alone; Window 8 has also not been popularly received; and it remains to be seen how the market will react to their new Xbox One game console.
