Microsoft updates Skype and OneDrive for Web
Microsoft updates Skype and OneDrive for Web
Since last year, you can use Skype right in your desktop web browser without the need to install any app. Now, you can call mobile phones and landlines directly from Skype for Web, too.
Announced over a blog post, all you need is Skype credit or a subscription to start making affordable international calls from Skype.
Also new is the ability to watch YouTube videos without leaving Skype, thanks to the new way URLs show up in Skype for Web, which now includes an image from the webpage. You can also share a conversation to people who are currently not a Skype contact. In fact, they don’t even need to be a Skype user, because they can join the chat as a guest over Skype for Web. And last but not least, Microsoft has enabled notifications to Skype for Web.
Simpler OneDrive.com sharing
Over at OneDrive.com, Microsoft has updated the sharing UI to make the sharing experience less confusing. Previously, when you clicked ‘Share’, you’re presented with the option to either ‘Invite people’ or ‘Get a link’. Now, it’s just ‘Get a link’ and ‘Email’. And if you were to select the latter, you get to enter the email addresses and select permission level.
Microsoft’s Omar Shahine:
Design is important and so is evidence. To make sure the new design was doing its job, we did an A/B test with approximately 28,000 real-world users to compare its performance with the old design. As expected, the new dialog helped people more successfully share files, and resulted in more people sharing more stuff more often.
