Microsoft surprises us with the Surface Book; calls it the "ultimate laptop"

Update: Hands-on!

Before today, most of us expected Microsoft to announce the Lumia 950/950 XL and Surface Pro 4 at its mega Windows 10 devices event in New York City; and indeed, that’s exactly what happened. But the company has saved the best for last; and the latest big thing that came out of Redmond is the Surface Book, Microsoft's first-ever laptop.

Microsoft has even gone as far as calling the Surface Book the “ultimate laptop”, though looking at its specs and craftsmanship, it’s not hard to see why the company is so proud of it. Sporting a 6th-gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor, up to 1TB of internal storage and 16GB RAM, Intel HD 520 graphics, optional discrete NVIDIA GeForce graphics, integrated backlit keyboard, glass trackpad, updated Surface Pen with 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, a detachable, 13.5-inch PixelSense display (with six million pixels!) that one can flip over fully as well, and 12 hours of battery life, the Surface Book (with a starting price of US$1,499) is one high performance notebook targeting both enthusiasts and pro users.

Here’s a rundown of its specs, courtesy of Microsoft:

And here's the U.S. pricing for the Surface Book, which will arrive in the U.S. starting October 26. Local availability and pricing details will be announced closer to launch.
