Microsoft Security Essentials Now Free for Small Businesses

Singapore, 16 November 2010 – Small businesses in Asia can now enjoy real-time antivirus and anti-malware software free of charge, as Microsoft makes its Microsoft Security Essentials available to small businesses with up to 10 PCs installed with genuine Windows software.

By offering small businesses no-cost protection from viruses, spyware and other malicious threats, Microsoft is underlining its commitment to help small enterprises save money and grow their business. This reduces their risk of exposure to viruses and malware even as the internet becomes an increasingly important resource and customer touchpoint.

“Small businesses are under constant pressure to reduce cost and increase productivity,” said John Fernandes, Director, Business and Marketing Organization, Microsoft Singapore. “Small businesses tell us they need a simple and trusted solution to protect their critical business data, and that they want to minimize downtime caused by security threats or data loss, all of which can greatly impact their business. We have answered them by offering Microsoft Security Essentials at no cost."

Microsoft Security Essentials uses advanced system scanning and removal technologies that employ a definitions database which details the characteristics and behaviors of known malware. Threats are collected every month from more than 600 million PCs around the world and are assessed by the Microsoft Malware Protection Center, and new signatures are written and deployed daily.

John added: “Microsoft Security Essentials is easy to install, simple to use and always kept up to date. Its real-time protection addresses the ongoing security needs of a genuine Windows PC, and removes the need for installing other cumbersome antivirus software. Best of all, it is designed to run quietly in the background, enabling users to continue using their PCs – and run their small businesses – without constant interruptions.”

The anti-malware engine used in Microsoft Security Essentials – and in all of Microsoft’s security products – is regularly tested by numerous organizations around the world and has consistently been certified by the industry’s leading independent certification authorities: International Computer Security Association Labs (ICSA) and West Coast Labs, VB100, and AV-Test.

Powered by the same core malware protection engine that drives Microsoft’s enterprise solutions, Microsoft Security Essentials helps protect PCs from viruses, spyware and other malicious threats. The software requires no registration, trials or renewals and is available for download directly from Microsoft.com.

Microsoft Security Essentials is already offered free to consumers using genuine Microsoft software at home. OEMs and System Builders can pre-install Microsoft Security Essentials on their consumer-bound PCs to provide quality malware protection to their customers out of the box and at no cost.

Microsoft Security Essentials currently supports 25 languages including English, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Simplified and Traditional Chinese. For more information visit: www.microsoft.com/security_essentials.
