Microsoft’s LTE-capable Lumia 640 and 640 XL handsets will go on sale this Saturday

Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE.

First seen at Mobile World Congress this past March, Microsoft’s two mid-range, 4G LTE-capable Lumia handsets, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL, would go on sale in Singapore this Saturday at Microsoft Authorized Mobile Reseller in Funan DigitaLife Mall and GadgetWorld, 3Mobile, and Handphoneshop outlets. The 5-inch 640 is priced at S$299; the 5.7-inch 640 XL S$429. All three local telcos and A-Mobile will also be retailing the devices with data plans.

The Lumia 640 and the 640 XL are powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1GB of RAM. Both handsets have only 8GB of onboard storage, but they also sport a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 128GB. In addition, with a Microsoft account, you get 15GB of OneDrive cloud storage for free. (Pro tip: Get another 15GB when you set the phone to backup photos to OneDrive.)

While the Lumia 640 XL has a larger screen, both phones’ displays have the same resolution: 1,280 x 720 pixels. One advantage of the bigger phone is that it also packs a bigger battery (3,000mAh vs. 2,500mAh). Its twin cameras are also better. To be more specific, the 640 XL has a 13-megapixel rear camera with Zeiss optics and a 5MP front-facing camera that does 1080p video, while the smaller 640 has an 8MP rear camera and a 1MP front-facing camera.

Expectedly, both Lumia phones come with Windows Phone 8.1 OS and the Lumia Denim update out of the box. Windows 10, Microsoft’s next major operating system, will be a free upgrade when it’s generally available later this year.

From now to June 30, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL will also come with a free 1-year subscription of Office 365 Personal, which includes always-up-to-date Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Office 365 Personal also comes with an additional 1TB of OneDrive storage, and 60 Skype world minutes. To redeem this offer, users need to download the Office 365 gift app from the Windows Phone Store by June 30, and activate it by August 14, 2015.
