Microsoft rumored to be preparing Surface Pro 4 to challenge new Apple MacBook
According to sources, Microsoft is currently working on the successor to the Surface Pro 3. Likely to be called the Surface Pro 4, Microsoft's new hybrid device will likely go head to head against Apple's recently announced MacBook.
Microsoft is serious about its Surface business, the Surface Pro 3 was extremely well received and they are keen to build on its success. The Surface business unit recently achieved over a billion dollars in revenue, which means Microsoft must have at least sold a million Surface devices.
The Surface Pro 4 is rumored to be powered by Intel's new Core M processor, which means they could employ fan-less chassis designs, allowing the Surface Pro 4 to be slimmer and lighter. Display size and resolution is expected to stay the same at 12-inches and 2160 x 1440 pixels, but Microsoft is expected to double the amount of RAM to 16GB and will offer models with up to 1TB of flash storage.
The choice of Intel's new Core M processor gave us mixed reactions. Although this means the new Surface Pro 4 will likely be thinner and lighter, it also means that it will be less powerful. In our review of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro, we found that moving from a Core i5 to a Core M processor came at the cost of reduced performance. Furthermore, the Surface Pro 3 was offered with fairly powerful Core i7 processors, so the drop in performance from these Core i7 models will be even more significant.
At this point, it is believed that Microsoft is targeting a July launch for its Surface Pro 4.
