Microsoft releases new Surface Pro 3 firmware update to address the tablet's recent battery issues

As promised, Microsoft has just released a system firmware update for the Surface Pro 3 to resolve the battery issues users of the tablet have been facing recently.

To be more specific, this update, called System Firmware Update - 8/29/2016 in Windows Update, should fix the issue of the Surface Pro 3 seemingly not holding a charge. According to Microsoft, this happens only to a limited number of Surface Pro 3 devices, and it’s because an “error condition” causes the full charge capacity of the battery to be misreported to the OS and device firmware. When this happens, the system no longer charges the battery to its full actual capacity, and the device is unable to function on battery power.

With this latest firmware update, the affected logic in the firmware component has been corrected to allow the actual battery capacity on devices with this particular part to be accurately reported. Microsoft also says the reported full charge capacity will self-correct over the next several charge/discharge cycles.

For more details, especially for users who have paid for an out-of-warranty exchange for this issue, do check out the FAQ here.
