Microsoft paid this woman US$10,000 for an unwanted Windows 10 installation

Microsoft has since taken to automatically upgrading user PCs to Windows 10, much to the chagrin of those who don’t yet want to move on to the new operating system. As it turns out, one woman was actually compensated for that. According to a report in The Seattle Times, Microsoft is paying US$10,000 to Teri Goldstein for forcing an automatic Windows 10 upgrade.

Goldstein runs a California travel agency, and says that the affected PC was a work computer which was unable to function properly after the OS was upgraded without her permission. She then sued Microsoft for lost wages and compensation to replace her computer.

She has reportedly emerged victorious, and Microsoft decided to drop its appeal last month and pay the judgement.

A Microsoft spokesperson has said that the appeal was dropped to avoid the expense of further litigation, but that doesn’t mean that the company will not still contest similar cases that are brought against it in the future.

Nagging reminders to update to Windows 10 have drawn the ire of many users, but there’s just a month left to the free one-year upgrade window. After 29 July, Microsoft has said that it will remove the Get Windows 10 app from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs, so if you’re resisting an upgrade to Windows 10 for some reason or another, you won’t have to keep an eye on the app for much longer.
