Microsoft: Office 2016 for PC coming in 2H 2015

Microsoft is prepping Office universal apps for Windows 10 for release later this year.

Yesterday at the Windows 10 event, we caught glimpses of universal apps for Office that are touch and mobile-optimized, and which run great on small devices like phones and tablets all the way up to giant touchscreen devices like the Microsoft Surface Hub. If you’re keen to try Office for Windows 10, know that preview versions will be available with the Windows 10 Technical Preview in the coming weeks; and when they’re released later this year, they will be preloaded for free on phones and small tablets running Windows 10, as well as be made available on the Windows Store for other devices.

If you’re interested to find out more about these new Office universal apps for Windows 10, Microsoft has published a blog post today to reiterate some features. Like the new Insights for Office in Read mode in Word that pulls additional online resources to supplement your reading; the touch-first controls in Excel; the Ink Tools in PowerPoint; the consistent Office ribbon experience in OneNote; and the new gestures in Outlook.

Here's a video by Office Mechanics showing some of these features:

Another tidbit of info shared by Microsoft is the timeframe for the next Office desktop suite, which is now confirmed to be called Office 2016. Not much is shared with regards to its features (we suppose Microsoft is leaving that for other events like the Build conference), but the company did say that Office 2016 is “best suited for a PC with keyboard and mouse” and that it has “compelling new experiences”. Also, Office 2016 will also be released in the second half of 2015.
