Shots fired at IFA 2014, with Microsoft's VP of Mobile Sales, Chris Weber, calling out Samsung and Apple for "overcharging for a smartphone experience that is clearly inferior to Lumia". Weber's justification for saying so comes in the form of the new Lumia 830 smartphone, which Weber called "an affordable flagship."
On the outside, the Lumia 830 is essentially a thinner, less bulky, and lighter version of the Lumia 930. It includes a 10-megapixel PureView camera with what Microsoft is calling the “thinnest” optical image stabilization system on a Lumia to date, which results in an interesting design that looks a bit like the large circular Lumia 1020 camera housing (thankfully without the protruding bulge).
The 830 utilizes the same premium aluminum body and polycarbonate rear build as the 930, but has managed to cut the chunky 930 to a more respectable 8.5mm and 150g. Like the 930, it also includes integrated wireless charging, and will come in the same four color variants: green, orange, white, and black.
Where the 830 really differs from the 930 - and here's where the 'affordable' part comes in - is under the hood. The Lumia 830 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 with 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. The 830's 5-inch display is also just 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, rather than the beautiful Full HD display on the Lumia 930.
The Lumia 830 will be available later this month globally with Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Denim upgrade pre-installed, priced at 330 euros (about S$540).
For the local market in Singapore, Microsoft has announced that the Lumia 830 will be available from 27th September at S$529.
