Microsoft to Investigate Broadband Potential of Unused TV Spectrum

Microsoft will begin testing this week to see if unused frequencies in the TV spectrum could be used for broadband. The end results of this investigation could be a big step forward toward widely available broadband.

"Spectrum is a finite natural resource. We can't make more and we must use it efficiently and wisely," Dan Reed, Microsoft's vice president of technology policy and strategy, told the newspaper. "The TV white spaces offer tremendous potential to extend the benefits of wireless connectivity to many more people, in more locations, through the creation of super Wi-Fi networks."

If successful, it wouldn't just mean lower mobile broadband prices. The potential of such technology could mean that people living in more remote parts of the world, or parts where there are no physical telecommunication infrastructures, can get connected much easier.
