Microsoft goes all out with full-screen prompt to get you to upgrade to Windows 10

Microsoft’s Windows 10 upgrade prompts have been the source of considerable controversy, and even one US$10,000 lawsuit. But as we near the 29 July deadline to upgrade for free, Microsoft is making a last ditch attempt to convince laggards to move on to its newest operating system. This takes the form of a full-screen prompt to really get your attention, reminding you that the free upgrade offer ends on 29 July and allowing you to upgrade immediately.

However, perhaps to avoid stirring further ire, Windows 7 and 8.1 users will be able to dismiss the prompt for good by selecting the option to not be notified again. Alternatively, they can also choose to be reminded later.

Furthermore, not everyone will actually see the prompt. For instance, users who already have the latest “Get Windows 10” app will be exempted. If your machine is incompatible with Windows 10, or if you’ve previously upgraded and uninstalled the OS or even experienced a failed upgrade, then you won’t see the prompt either.

Finally, if you’ve hidden the “Get Windows 10” app notifications, or disabled the Windows 10 upgrade or offer screen through registry key settings, the prompt will not bother you as well.

Once the free upgrade offer expires on 29 July, Microsoft will start charging S$229 for the OS.
