Microsoft details its Windows 10 rollout plan

As we already know, Windows 10 for PCs and tablets will arrive on July 29, 2015. But would everyone who reserve a copy get it on the same day? In a blog post today, Microsoft’s OS chief Terry Myerson has shared more details on how the OS would be delivered, not just to consumers but its OEM partners and business customers as well.

Firstly, a build of Windows 10 will be given to OEMs “soon”. And “soon after”, a build will go to retailers all over the world. The latter is so that they could assist customers with upgrades of newly purchased devices that are running Windows 8.1. If you see the sticker below on a Windows 8.1 device that you’re buying, it means the manufacturer has tested and confirmed that it’s compatible with Windows 10.

Moving on, starting July 29, Windows 10 will first go out to Windows Insiders. After which, qualified Windows 7 and 8.1 users who have reserved the OS will be notified - not together, but in waves. So if you don’t get a notification on July 29, don’t panic because it's going to be a staggered rollout.

If you system isn’t ready yet for the upgrade, more details would be provided. If Microsoft detects app or system issues that need addressing, in some cases, it’d include contact info so that you can follow up with the vendor. If the compatibility issue is app related, you’re most likely able to proceed with the upgrade, and then find alternative compatible solutions in the Windows Store after that.

While Windows 10 Pro and Home editions are arriving on July 29, Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Education would only drop two days later on August 1. Volume licensing customers will be able to download them from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). More details about the various editions can be found here.
