Microsoft Announces Office 365 Personal Subscription for Individuals

Microsoft has announced an individual subscription plan for Microsoft Office 365. Named Office 365 Personal and coming in spring, it allows one PC (or Mac) and one tablet to be connected to Office 365, and is priced at US$6.99/month or US$69.99/year.

The current Office 365 Home Premium (which costs S$13.80/month or S$138/year here) that caters to five PCs or Macs, plus select mobile devices, will continue to exist, but the name will be changed to Office 365 Home once Office 365 Personal is launched. Whichever subscription plan you choose though, you still get extras like 60 minutes worth of Skype calls per month, and an additional 20GB of OneDrive (previously called SkyDrive) cloud storage. Being a subscription plan, you also get frequent updates, thus ensuring that you always have the latest version of Office on your computer or mobile device.

Certainly, with Office 365 Personal, it lowers the cost for those who have no family members to share an Office 365 Home Premium subscription with, potentially driving more sales for Microsoft. On the other hand, it also makes Office 365 Home Premium looks more attractive when you consider that it can be used on four more PCs or Macs for just an additional US$30.

We’ll report back when we hear more from Microsoft Singapore regarding local availability and pricing.
