Microsoft Acquires Perceptive Pixel, Shows it's Serious about Touch

Microsoft has just announced its acquisition of Perceptive Pixel, the company perhaps best known for its humongous 82-inch multi-touch display which Microsoft demoed earlier at MWC. The company was founded about six years ago and specializes in high-performance multi-touch workstations and "wall solutions".

Of the deal, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that while Perceptive Pixel's work is "fairly revolutionary", he admitted that a lot needs to be done to bring prices down to a level suitable for the masses. Perceptive Pixel's hardware currently retails for around the US$180,000 mark.

This move clearly cements Microsoft's commitment to multitouch devices and solutions, and reinforces the company's commitment to its PixelSense smart table solutions - previously known as Surface.
