You'll still need your phone (at least initially) to access Whatsapp on the web.
If you're one of the millions of WhatsApp users in the world (like we are), chances are you've bemoaned the fact that the messaging app isn't available on the net for easy access while you're on a computer. That's no longer the case.
Starting from today, the service is also online. The online version, called WhatsApp Web, functions similarly to the app version. You need to link your phone account to the web version first, which you can do so at the Whatsapp Web login page.
Make sure the browser you're using is Chrome though, it won't work on any other browser (though the WhatsApp team says they're working on it). Other than Chrome and an Android phone (iOS has the app, but not the web messenger functionality) being requirements, make sure the WhatsApp app in your phone is the latest version. If everything's good, you're on the right track.
You need to scan the QR code from the Whatsapp itself, not a generic QR reader.
Open WhatsApp and at the Menu, hit the Option button (the three square buttons at the top) and then hit the WhatsApp Web tab to scan the QR code on the Chrome browser and you're in. The app version doesn't replace the mobile version though, it simply acts as a mirror. Every message you get while on the web messenger will also be on the mobile version of the app.
One thing to take note. The WhatsApp app doesn't seem to be updated for our region yet (or maybe it's just us). We've tried updating our WhatsApp on our mobiles, but we just get a message saying that ours is the latest version of the app. Obviously it's not (since it's missing the WhatsApp Web tab). Even an uninstall and a fresh install didn't work for us.
Alternatively, you could try downloading the WhatsApp app update from website but again, we encountered errors installing the .apk on our devices. Perhaps it might work for you. If not, we guess the only thing left to do is wait.
